David's story has made an impact on many. The following are select testimonials.
FL Austin Wallace, MD - Eye and Ear Clinic Physicians, Inc.
I have known David Briles since I eveluated him for recurrent squamos cell carcinoma of the larynx in 1996 after he failed to be cured by previous full course radiation therapy. I had the privelage of serving Mr. Biles by doing his laryngectomy and ncek dissection in March of 1996, and even during those dark days, his optimistic, sunny dispostion was very apparent. Since that time, he has continued to impress me with his unfailing work ethic, both in terms of becoming the most fluent, understandable esophogeal speaker that I have ever known, and also with regard to his tireless work with support groups for laryngectomees. His work with the Lost Chords Club has been admirable and quite helpful in the public health domain. It has been a pleasure to be able to serve and nkow such a fine individual, and also look forward to his continued hard work in the public health domain with regard to encouraging smoking cessation.
Richard L. Meckstroth, DDS - WVU School of Dentistry
I asked David Briles to share his story with the third year dental students in their dental publich health course. David was able to impress upon the students the importance of talking with patients that use tobacco about their addiction and introducing them to ways of quitting. He held their attention and stimulated discussion about the dangers of tabacco and the impact tobacco has had on his life. Students thanked David for sharing his story and many spoke with me after class about how David had impressed upon them the importance of including tobacco cessation and prevention as a standard of care.
David has a very powerful message to share and is able to adapt to the audience' needs and interests. His story is appropriate for various age groups and David about addressing specific questions in a way that includes the audience in the discussion.
Kelli H. Frampton, TTS - Tobacco Policy Coordinator, Wellness Council of West Virginia
David spoke at our annual Wellness Council of WV Spring Conference this past week. He was, as one participant declared, a rock star! His story is that of a very real person who faced a harsh reality and rebounded beyond limits. He was thoughtful, articulate and met the needs of a very diverse audience. His message is clear and his voice is strong - what a fantastic opportunity and a genuine pleasure to meet him.
